Preparing for the Rainy Season
We just had some of the earliest pre-winter rains that we can remember. It's a great reminder to start getting buttoned up for Winter. The rainy season should officially begin mid-October to November, but considering that we have more rain in the forecast this week we strongly encourage everyone to get on Winterization.
To prepare for the upcoming rainy season, run through our simplified check-list below. And, check in with your Stormwater Manager if you have any questions.
Implement an effective combination of erosion and sediment controls for active and inactive disturbed soil areas
If there work areas that are active and need to be left uncovered, implement erosion control on as much area as possible, and limit the footprint of active disturbed soil to only that which can easily be protected prior to a rain event
Plan to remove or cover stockpiles
Move stored materials out of flowlines
Make sure perimeter controls are effective and in good condition
Schedule erosion control application
Make sure inlet protection is clean and effective
Re-direct run-on around work areas
Prepare to put chemicals away prior to rain
Implement effective housekeeping
Order emergency supplies to have on hand such as gravel bags, fiber rolls, and plastic cover
Remember, we are here to help you. Should we see any "chocolate milk" water leaving your site we will need your help to get the situation under control as soon as possible. Accidents do happen, but we want to work as hard as we can to prevent them.
It's also our goal to help you avoid any fines. As a reminder, fines can be up to $37,500 per calendar day per violation, if under the California Construction General Permit.
